The Southwest Region of Washington is known for fertile estuaries and Willapa National Wildlife Reserve, with small towns and historical landmarks. This area is where Lewis and Clark concluded their 8,000-mile exploration in 1805. The region includes the Columbia River Gorge, a scenic, protected area. The largest city is Vancouver, the fourth largest in Washington State, which overlooks the Columbia River. Other highlights include Aberdeen, where visitors can see a replica of explorer Robert Gray's ship, as well as Gray's Harbor; he discovered the Columbia River about 200 years before Lewis and Clark explored the area.

Clark County is Washington's fifth most populated county, and sits across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. The county features several national sites, including Fort Vancouver National Historical Site, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Vancouver is the largest city in the county, and it is also the county seat.

The largest city in Lewis County is Centralia, with Chehalis being the county seat. The county features a portion of the Cascade Mountains, as well as several lakes and rivers. There are several national protected areas: Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Mount Rainier National Park and Mount St. Helens Volcanic National Monument. One of the world's tallest Douglas fir trees ever recorded was in Lewis County, reaching a height of 390 feet.

Cowlitz County's largest city is Longview, and Kelso is the county seat. The county includes the edge of the Cascade Mountains, which is the origin of many of the county's rivers, including the Columbia River, Cowlitz River, Coweeman River, Kalama River, Lewis River and Toutle River. This county also features Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, in addition to many county parks. The county is the 28th largest in Washington State.
